Why theater?: Nothing beats the energy in the room during a live performance.
Tell us about No Static At All: It’s inspired by the true story of my quest to find meaning after my best friend had a religious awakening and moved to Israel. My search for enlightenment, instead of leading me across the world, led me to the record store, and in particular, to the music of Steely Dan.
What inspired you to write No Static At All?: Music constantly inspires me to create theater. I wanted to share my sense of enlightenment. I also wanted to challenge myself to create a theatrical monologue – I wanted to see if I could hold an audience by simply telling a story, in an around-the-campfire, almost primal, style.
What kind of theater speaks to you? What or who inspires you as an artist?: I love physical theater. The work of Theatre Movement Bazaar is really exciting to me. I also love storytelling. Stephen Tobolowsky has been a major influence on me lately. I’m addicted to his podcast.
If you could work with anyone you’ve yet to work with, who would it be?: I’d love to work on James Franco’s adaptation of "The Disaster Artist", which is one of my favorite books.
What show have you recommended to your friends?: Women, by Beth Dies, Inc. It’s a mashup of "Little Women" and HBO’s "Girls".
Who would play you in a movie about yourself and what would it be called?: Instead of a movie I’d do an animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with a script by Donald Fagen. All the voices would be done by Tommy Wiseau. The title would be “Kings of Del Taco.”
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?: I’m really hesitant to admit it, but I frequently crank up Dave Matthews Band when driving home late at night.
What’s the most played song on your iTunes?: “One Red Thread” by Blind Pilot
If you weren’t working in theater, you would be _____?: I’d probably take after my mother and be a therapist.
What’s up next?: Getting to work on that animated film. I think that needs to happen.
